GOBBO CLAIMS HIGH GUN AT WANGARATTA

The November DTL Championship held at Wangaratta Clay Target Club on the 18th, attracted another good roll up of shooters.  The entire day ran smoothly, thanks to the untiring efforts of club volunteers in setting up the grounds and running the program during the day.

The club ran three thirty target championship events, which was a popular program for all concerned.  The weather was ideal for trapshooting and the enviro friendly orange targets stood out very well against the background.  The club continues to operate two out of three trap layouts at present,  necessary alterations to DTL trap one are planned after the release of the consultants Clean Up Plan in the first half of next year.

The 30 target double barrel event was nicely won by AA grader John Gemmill, with a clean result of 44/44.  Junior champ. Jacob Motha placed 2nd in this grade on 43/44.  Lady top shot, Kiara Dean also stayed well on target winning A grade 42/42 and Rob. Glossop shot 41/42 winning 2nd place.  A good effort from Rob, considering that he runs the computer based record system in the office in between his event participation.  A tally of 28/30 did the job for Frank Balcombe in B grade and Rob Foster shot 41/43 claiming 2nd place.  Neil Ham claimed the ribbon in C on 28/31 and Riley Sandral was one target behind in 2nd place.

Event 3 was a 30 target single barrel championship, won by AA grade shooter Alex Gobbo 40/41, leaving Chris Figgins in 2nd place 39/41.  Rob Steel has added another sash to his collection by winning A grade with 27/30 ahead of David Luelf 26/30.  Ricky Bilney broke 27/30 winning B grade placing Rob Foster in 2nd 26/30.  C grade was sorted out with Peter Lang claiming 1st place on 25/31 and local junior shooter Colby McQuade placed 2nd with 24/30.

Lastly, a 30 target Points Score event was held and a perfect score of 90/90 from Daryl Hunt gave him the overall and AA winner of this event.  Alex Gobbo scored 84/90 points taking 2nd place.  Another local junior shooter, Jack Sandral, won A grade on 86/90 ahead of Ray Gamble on 84/90.  Frank Balcombe claimed another sash on the day by winning B grade 83/90, with Scott Glossop winning 2nd with a result of 79/90.  Nice to see lady shooter Louise Wilson win C grade on 82/91 points and Peter Lang followed in 2nd place with 81/91.

The high gun winners for the day were – O/all, Alex Gobbo 156/160,  Veterans, Bob Leita 161/172 and Junior, Jack Sandral 148/160.

As usual, the club conducted the Champion of Champions High Gun winners for 2017, resulting in O/all – Daryl Hunt,  Veteran – Bob Leita and Junior – Jack Sandral.  Well done to these three consistent high gun winners!

REYNOLDS RIGHT ON TARGET AT WANGARATTA

Very warm and fine weather greeted competitors at the November 5 Stand Sporting Clays competition on Sunday the 12th.

The club grounds are expertly maintained by Rob Pigram and Graham Coyle, a credit to them both.  A big thanks also to Col. Crittenden, Graham Coyle and club president Phillip Smith for setting up the traps early on the day.  The tireless efforts of club personnel like these enthusiastic members,  are what makes it all happen so successfully for non profit sporting clubs of all disciplines around the country.

Mark Reynolds was in top form at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club,  a combination of timing, stance and follow through skills on targets paid off for him on the day.  His result of 88/100 was won Mark overall title and best in AA grade.  David Jackel improved as the day went on and shot a clean score of 25/25 in the last round of the 100 target event, quite an achievement by any standards.  Jackel won 2nd in AA grade with a score of 80/100.  Christian McGauran shot another excellent tally of 86/110 winning A grade and maintained his reputation for consistency and accurate marksmanship.  Well recognized already as equally competitive with the best adult shooters around, Junior shooter Rhys McGauran won 2nd place in this grade after a short shoot off with uncle Christian finishing on 83/110.  The B grade sash was claimed by David Whyte by blasting 72/100 clays on the day and Gary Byron shot 63/100 winning C grade ahead of Geoff Agnew on 50/100.

The next 5 stand competition will be held on Sunday 11 February.

DALLAS BALL STAYS ON TARGET

A warm, sunny and windless day greeted shooters attending the Wangaratta Clay Target Club October Down The Line championship shoot on Saturday the 21st.  Good to see visitors from Melbourne and South Australia at the local club,  well recognized as one of the best and friendliest country shooting clubs in Victoria.

The club used Eco Friendly targets during the event, which were extremely popular with the competitors present.  The high visibility of the orange flouro coloured targets are a real bonus, especially against the green background prevalent at this time of year.  Ground one DTL is currently out of action due to the required realignment of  this layout and it is hoped to have this trap back in action in due course.

The cash divide point score eye opener was divided amongst 7 shooters and after the warm up the club conducted two 50 tgt. championship events.

Darren Stone from Wangaratta Saw & Lawnmower Service generously sponsored the 50 tgt Points Score event and provided some great trophies manufactured by STIHL.  Darren is a regular annual sponsor of the club and without the support of businesses like his, the club could not provide trophies of a similar value or quality.  Local member and Shoot Marshal for the day, Daryl Hunt, shot 188/192 winning AA and overall .  Ross Liersch finished with a result of 187/192 taking out 2nd place in this grade.  A tally of 145/150 was enough for Wally Clarke to win A grade ahead of Michael Rowan 150/159.  B grader Neville Bussell was all smiles taking out his grade on 140/150 with David Luelf achieving 2nd place on 138/150.  Junior shooter Riley Sandral put in another top performance winning C grade 125/150 placing Colby McQuade 2nd place on 113/150.

Another local regular sponsor Fred Bienvenu from Wangaratta Audiology provided the trophies for the 50 tgt. double barrel event.  Fred is himself a keen trap shooter but was overseas on the day and unable to present the trophies.  Again, the club recognizes Fred’s generosity in supporting his home club and thanks him for his ongoing help.  Dallas Ball shot a flawless score of 94/94 winning overall and AA grade with Allan Cooper performing almost as well with 93/94.  Michael Rowan shot another clean result of 52/52 winning A and Peter Watkins finished 2nd 51/52.  David Luelf took out first place in B grade 48/50 and Ian Cooksey shot 44/50 to win 2nd place.  Junior top shot Colby McQuade won’t remain in C grade much longer, winning this grade with a nice score of 48/50, placing Riley Sandral 2nd place in the event with 44/50.

Once the results were all tallied,  O/all High Gun winner was Dallas Ball,  Veterans went to Allan Cooper 220/230 and Juniors trophy nicely won by Jacob Motha 218/230.

SEYMOUR STAYS IN FRONT

Overcast and wet conditions were no deterrent for the enthusiastic group of sporting clay target specialists at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club October shoot on Sunday 08th.

The 100 target event was generously sponsored by Ben Lodge from Ground Corp (Brisbane), the environmental consultancy specialist that completed the Environmental Site Assessment at the clubs grounds.

Well recognized and top level AA grade shooter Marty Seymour, put in another sterling effort on the day taking home the overall winners sash by demolishing 89/100 targets.  Brodie Seccull shot 79/100 winning 2nd place in this grade.  Consistent local shooter, Christian McGauran returned a high score in A grade of 84/100, ahead of Andrew Harrington on 82/110.  Marc Connell, another regular visitor to the clubs ground, won B grade on 66/100, with Gary Byron taking 2nd place on 60/100.  Barry Ellis shot well all day, particularly his last set of 25 targets winning C grade with a tally of 66/100 and Paul Weygood took out 2nd place on 62/100.

Many competitors remarked on the high standard the clubs volunteers had set the traps early in the morning.  Thanks to the clubs expert committee men , Graham Coyle, Col. Crittenden and Phillip Smith for again putting in the time and effort to complete this challenging task.

BIG DAY AT WANGARATTA

The Wangaratta Clay Target Club Down The Line shoot on Saturday 16 September attracted 50 competitors.  This is the largest group of shooters since the club was closed temporarily in May last year.  It’s very reassuring for the committee to see that shooters are once again returning to enjoy the excellent facilities and great atmosphere which the club is well renowned for.  As is well known amongst the community, the clay target club was temporarily closed down in May 2016 due to environmental concerns and reopened under certain conditions and restrictions earlier this year.

The club presently operates two of the three DTL traps at the range, due to a necessary re alignment of this layout in the near future.  As a result, the last event was reduced from a 50 target to 25 target event in order to finish the competition in a reasonable time.

A 10 tgt point score cash divide eye opener was shared by 7 shooters.  The first main event was a 30 tgt point score championship, kindly sponsored by Sandral Transport.  Top local shot Allan Cooper put in a superb performance winning overall and AA grade 110/111.  John Gemmill followed closely behind taking 2nd place on 109/111.  Allen Cole dropped two points winning A grade 88/90 and Peter Watkins achieved a tally of 89/93 claiming 2nd.  B grader Phillip Woods took out his grade with 86/90 and Thomas McGrath ended on 90/96 in 2nd place.  An excellent score for  C grade of 88/90 was reached by Ryan Wilkinson with Riley Sandral in 2nd place with 81/90.

The 25 tgt Dick English Mem. Handicap was again generously sponsored by Jack ‘Irish’ McGauran, a relative of Dick’s.  Jack was on hand during the entire day to present the trophies to the winners of this event.  Michael Rowan won 1st place 38/39,  2nd went to Carl Comensoli 37/38 and 3rd to Craig Henwood 25/26.   Thanks again Jack.

The final event was also sponsored by another regular and generous business donor– Winsec Savings and Loans, Wangaratta.  Tony Ruvolo from Winsec, himself a keen trapshooter, presented the trophies to the winners at the end of the days activities.  This event was originally planned to be 50 targets, however due to a lack of time to complete the event, a decision was made to reduce it to a 25 target championship.  Well recognized as one of the best Down The Line shooters in the country, Mitchell Iles shot a clean result of 50/50 after a shoot off, taking out overall and AA grade.  Mitchell has a long and distinguished pedigree in clay target shooting, his grandfather Bill Iles was a grand master of the sport for many decades and his coaching skills have benefited many top grade competitors, including Mitchell.  Phil. Matthews claimed 2nd place in AA with 27/28.  Committee member Anton Motha dropped only one winning A on 49/50, leaving Alex Gobbo in 2nd place shooting 39/40.  Bob Glossop had a perfect round of 25/25 to win B and Slap Comensoli smashed 50/55 finishing 2nd.  C grade was nicely won by junior champ. Ryan Wilkinson 28/31, 2nd place went to Barry Ellis 27/30.

Overall high guns were awarded to Carl Comensoli 144/148,  Veterans to Allan Cooper 136/140 and best junior was Ryan Wilkinson 129/140.

The club wishes to thank the sponsors for their generosity by providing a range of valuable trophies on the day.

SUPER COOPER WINS HIGH GUN AT WANGARATTA.

The monthly Down The Line competition held at Wangaratta on 19 August attracted a good attendance, with 40 shooters lining up to shoot the 100 targets on offer.  The club is currently restricted to two disciplines, with skeet remaining out of action at present.  It is hoped  a suitable solution can be developed to reintroduce skeet in the future, subject to environmental approvals.

Ground one DTL trap is also inoperative at the moment, pending further work to realign this layout to comply with the authorities requirements.  This potentially causes delays in getting shooters through, however the club is mindful of this fact and does its best to process the events in a timely and efficient way.

The 10 tgt point score eye opener was shared by six shooters and was quickly followed by the 30 tgt points score event.  Allan Cooper, overall High Gun winner on the day, stayed right on target winning AA grade and overall with a perfect score of 90/90.  Allan was closely followed by Daryl Hunt taking 2nd place on 123/126.  Michael Rowan shot well winning A grade with 86/90 and Tony Plum achieved a 2nd place on 85/90.  Junior female competitor Kiara Dean had a terrific days shooting winning B grade 90/90, very well done Kiara.  Ian Cooksey shot 87/90 taking 2nd in this grade. Regular visitor to the Wangaratta club and consistent all rounder, Barry Ellis took home a sash in C grade 72/90, ahead of Riley Sandral, another junior showing potential, on 69/90.

The next 30 tgt event was the single barrel championship, nicely won by local club member and AA grade shooter, Daryl Hunt with 29/30.  Gordon Twamley, only one target behind, was placed 2nd on 28/30.  Michael Rowan claimed A grade with 28/30 hits placing local committee member Peter Sandral 2nd with 27/30.  Kiara Dean won her B grade again demolishing 28/31 targets, one target in front of Bob Glossop 27/31.  Another lady shooter, Kathleen Wilkins was in good form, winning C grade 23/30 and Ian Crisp placed 2nd with 22/30.

The final 30 tgt event was a double barrel c/ship. which resulted in local member Daryl Hunt taking out AA & O/all with a nice result of 45/45.  Club secretary Angelo Grassi was hot on his tail in AA grade placing 2nd on 44/45.  A grader Raymond Gamble lost only one target winning  this grade, ahead of Lachlan McDonald with a tally of 30/31.  Repeating her wins in both events two and three, Kiara Dean claimed another sash in B grade smoking 29/30 targets leaving Peter Lang in 2nd place 28/30.  In a repeat of event 2, Barry Ellis shot 28/33 winning C and Riley Sandral finished 2nd place 27/32.

The open and veterans High Guns were awarded to Alan Cooper 190/196 with best Junior on the day, Kiara Dean 188/196.

SHALE TOP GUN AGAIN.

Local top shot Adam Shale continued his run of success at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club on Sunday 13 August, winning overall and AA grade, dropping only 6 targets out of the 100 target event.  Any shooter that has competed in the sporting clay discipline would realize what a brilliant achievement a result like this would be.

Magnificent weather conditions greeted the competitors at the club on the day and as usual, everyone enjoyed the first rate facilities and friendliness that the Wangaratta club is famous for.

Colin Crittenden, Neil Plumridge and Phillp Smith were out early to expertly set up the traps on the two grounds.  5 Stand shooters enjoy a good variety of targets that include a combination of some easier and others more challenging to hit.  The club was again successful in providing this balance, guaranteeing a very satisfying day of trapshooting for all skill levels.

After a shoot off, Mark Reynolds claimed 2nd in AA grade with another top score of 110/120.  A grader Allan Seccull nicely smashed 83/100 winning his grade ahead of Chris Kloppenborg on 76/100.  Marc Connell may not remain in B grade much longer, with a winning tally of 86/110, followed by Colin Repacholi on another potential grade changing score of 85/100.  Lady shooter Nicki Jory settled down after a patchy start, winning C grade 47/100, leaving vintage shotgun specialist Barry Ellis in 2nd place with 38/100.

The ladies high gun was well claimed by welcomed visiting shooter Lyndall McNeil on 70/100 and the veterans trophy was awarded to Colin Repacholi.

The club has just set its program for 2018 and will continue to shoot on the second Sunday of each month.

HUNT WINS HIGH GUN TROPHY AT WANGARATTA.

The Wangaratta Clay Target Club provided a full day of DTL trap shooting with three events totaling 110 targets on Saturday 15 July.  The weather was kind to competitors, with an action packed day in a friendly atmosphere,  giving the club another big tick from all shooters present.  The grounds are in superb shape, thanks to the efforts of Graham Coyle and Bob Pigram.  The hours these two gentleman put in maintaining the range at North Wangaratta is to be commended.

The 10 tgt. points score eye opener event resulted in four possibles sharing the

cash dividend.

Following the eye opener, the club conducted a 50 tgt. Points Score championship event.  Committee member John Wojcik, dropped only one point winning AA and overall with the brilliant tally of 149/150 – well done John.  Overall high gun winner Daryl Hunt,  followed up closely taking second place with 148/150.  Rob Stackhouse’s eye was in winning A grade 147/150, placing Trevor Harbor 2nd place on 138/150.  A good effort was put in by Rob Glossop achieving 1st in B, achieving a score of 137/150, followed by Bob Foster on 132/150.  Barry Ellis took out C grade, 101/150.

The second championship event for the day was a 50 tgt. The High Gun winners for the day were,  Overall – Daryl Hunt 195/200,  Veteran – Rob Stackhouse 191/200,  Junior – Andrew Evans 183/200.

Whilst skeet remains ‘out of action’ at present, due to environmental issues, the club is actively promoting both the Down The Line and Sporting Clays disciplines.  More will be known about our requirements and skeet shooting, once the Environmental Management and Clean Up Plans are released later this year.  Please contact Brian Reid 03 57217799 for more information.

SHALE SHINES AT WANGARATTA SHOOT

Adam Shale once again demonstrated his remarkable shotgun marksmanship skills at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club 100 tgt 5 Stand Sporting Clays Championship event on Sunday 09th July.  Adam is part of a family of top shots and has been an active participant of the sport since beginning as a junior under the watchful eye of his mother Gaye, also a very keen, skilled trap shooter.

The club was complimented during the day about the way the targets had been set prior to the shoot. An excellent balance of angles, distances and speed was achieved to satisfy all skill levels of the group of enthusiastic participants attending the competition.  A mix of overcast and sunshine provided ideal shooting conditions for this most challenging of clay target disciplines,  at one of the best and friendliest clubs in Victoria.

AA grade Adam Shale produced an amazing result of 95/100, which ranks as one of the best scores shot in the history of sporting clays at the Wangaratta range.  Yarrawonga shooter Marty Seymour and another well recognized master at his game, took 2nd place in AA with the commendable tally of 91/100.  Brodie Seccull had no problems taking home a sash in A grade on 91/100, ahead of local shooter David Jackel 85/100.  David earned himself an upgrade into AA grade at the completion of the event.  Keen all rounder, Reg Carmody took out B grade with a score of 77/100 ahead of up and coming junior shooter Byron Wilson 73/100.  This was Byron’s first competition at an ACTA Affiliated club and he has been fortunate in receiving some expert coaching from his Pop, Reg Carmody. giving him the potential to go a long way in the sport.  Beechworth gentleman Barry Ellis again used one of his vintage side by side guns to effect winning C grade 57/100, placing Ross Winnell, a keen skeet shooter, in 2nd place on 49/100.

A relatively early finish all made for another excellent day of competitive clay target shooting at Wangaratta.

JUNE 5 STAND C/SHIP. EVENT

JOY FOR JORY

The June long weekend may have caused a drop in numbers at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club Sporting Clays event, however the quality of skill levels evident on the day demonstrated that some of the best shooters from the region were in action at the range.

Both grounds were expertly set up early on the day with an ideal mix of difficult and easier targets on offer.  This balancing act can be tricky at times to get right, however all shooters appeared very satisfied with the excellent range of flight angles chosen to suit all skill levels.

The weather conditions were ideal for target shooting and once again the club provided lots of tasty food catered for by Anita and her two daughters.  The day ran smoothly and finished early, coupled with a nice relaxed, friendly atmosphere, made the days event very satisfying for all competitors.

Local sporting clays expert Brett Jory,  took out the overall position with a top result of 92/100, nine targets ahead of 2nd place AA grade winner Max Kavanagh 83/100.  A grader Brodie Seccull demolished 81/100 targets winning this grade, with Allan Seccull following on 70/100.  Quiet achiever and very willing helper at the club shoots, Neil Plumridge earned himself an upgrade into A with a result of 71/100, placing Marc Connell 2nd in B grade 51/100.  Junior top shot Ben Kuschert won’t remain in C grade much longer winning his grade with an excellent tally of 71/100.  Nice to see Barry Ellis using his lovely old Greener side by side and his vintage Merkel U/O taking 2nd place on 61/100.

The club will continue holding 5 stand competitions on the second Sunday of each month.  We encourage all ACTA shooters to visit Wangaratta in the near future and enjoy a great day out by participating in this most exciting and skillful discipline.

MAY 5 STAND SPORTING CLAYS C/SHIP.

The Wangaratta Clay Target Club was thrilled to hold its first competition event on Sunday 7th May,  which is almost 12 months since the clubs activities were suspended due to lead contamination issues at the North Wangaratta Sports Reserve.  The club is pleased to have received interim approval from the EPA to resume shooting, subject to some restrictions over the clubs activities.

Many local and visiting competitors expressed their pleasure at being able to once again compete at one of the best regional clay target clubs in Victoria.

The club will be issued with both an environmental management and clean up plans later this year.  The committee and members remain hopeful that the requirements in these plans will be achievable, thus ensuring  the ongoing future of the club, in providing state of the art target shooting facilities for the many local enthusiasts and visitors the club always attracts.

The results on the day established the local McGauran family being at the pinnacle of top shots in this discipline.  Shaun McGauran won overall and AA grade on 85/100, closely followed by brother Christian McGauran 83/100.  Junior top gun Rhys McGauran, puts a lot of effort into ensuring his continued success in this difficult discipline, winning A grade with the excellent result of 84/100.  Royce Wojtowyez was only two targets behind placing him 2nd on 82/100.  Neil Plumridge, sporting a uniquely fashioned peak cap, shot very well winning B grade by breaking 80/100 targets, with 2nd place going to Bruce Duncan 72/100.  Josh Finemore took out C grade 66/100 and Tim Finemore was one target behind placing him 2nd.

The committee has decided to alter the dates to the second Sunday of each month for this discipline, commencing in June.
