LEIGH ROBERTS WINS ZONE SKEET

Leigh Roberts could hardly do a thing wrong at the V.C.T.A. North East zone skeet shoot at Wangaratta held on 24th April.  Producing a perfect score in the 50 tgt. zone championship and a too hard to beat tally of 49/50 in the zone skeet doubles, Leigh returned home with some ammunition and three sashes – including the overall NE Zone high gun title.

This is the clubs first competition using new Bowman skeet traps on ground 2, which performed flawlessly all day.  Ground 1 will soon have new Bowman’s fitted as well, giving shooters greater consistency of targets when shooting skeet over two grounds.

Other results in the 50 tgt. singles saw David Jackel take out 2nd place in AA grade one target behind Roberts on 49/50.  Club president / treasurer Phillip Smith also only dropped one in A grade winning him a sash.  Phil. is enjoying using his new Beretta A400, the reduced recoil coupled with an adjustable ventilated rib and stock, has improved his consistency of late.  Shepparton / Numurkah club member Peter Finn and regular visitor here with his son Colin, shot off for 2nd place in A grade, finishing with a score of 65/68.  Well done Peter.  Nice to see Rob Stackhouse from Euroa take home the sash in B grade shooting 47/50.  Rob. who is a keen down the line and sporting clay competitor, announced in his speech at presentation time that he intends to shoot more skeet in the future.  Long term local member Harry Memery shot 51/55 winning 2nd place in B.  Side by side gun  enthusiast Allan Baker put up a score of 45/50 winning C grade, ahead of Trevor Bussell in 2nd place on 43/50.

The N.E. Zone 25 pair doubles event won by Roberts,  placed AA grader Mark McDonald in 2nd position with a score of 48/50.  Peter Finn took out first place in A grade this time shooting 44/50 targets followed by Alison Harwood in 2nd on 42/50.  B grade went to Leonie Johnston 44/54 after a short shoot off with Ross Winnell on 43/54.  Allan Baker again won C grade smoking 40/50 clays with Trevor Bussell in 2nd place again 39/50.

TWAMLEY’S TOP PERFORMANCE AT WANGARATTA.

Lovely autumn weather greeted shooters at Wangaratta Clay Target Clubs two ‘Down The Line’ championship events on April 16.  The club uses fluoro White Flyer targets exclusively for this discipline and coupled with first rate equipment and infrastructure, results in consistent targets for these events.  Our club is also proud of the high standard of food on offer in the canteen, keeping shooters and visitors well nourished during the day.

Gordon Twamley’s near perfect performance allowed him to take home two overall winner sashes.  Gordon won the popular 50 target medley event and A grade with a remarkable result of 99/100, placing Brian Harrison 2nd in this grade on 96/100.  AA grader Daryl Hunt shot another good result of 98/100 winning AA, ahead of veteran shooter Stan Collins 117/120.  Junior shooter Jacob Motha produced a tally of 93/100 winning B grade putting local hard working clubman Graham Coyle 2nd with 111/120.  Keen DTL lady shooter Jess Goodall gained the C grade sash with 98/120 ahead of Ian Cooksey 97/120.

The second championship event was a 50 target double barrel and again Gordon Twamley was the winner.  Gordon produced a clean score of 69/69 followed by Paul Kovacs 60/61 in A grade.  John Wocjik scored 68/69 taking the honors in AA grade and Bob Leita was in 2nd place with 55/56.  Graham Coyle won B grade with 48/50 and Michael Rowan was one target behind on 47/50.  In a reverse situation of the first event, Ian Cooksey received the sash in C grade with 46/50 and Jess Goodall winning 2nd place on 42/50.

The high guns were awarded to Daryl Hunt – overall, Stan Collins – Veteran, Jacob Motha – Junior.

ADAM SHALE WINS OVERALL:

With a busy shoot calendar on in the district this weekend, the Wangaratta Clay Target club was pleased with the number of sporting clay enthusiasts that shot at their 100 target, April 5 Stand championship.  Nice weather prevailed all day,  coupled with mainly perfectly functioning traps and a large range of different targets on offer, all helped to provide shooters with a top day of clay target shooting.

The club includes a 100 target sporting clay championship event each month in its shoot program this year and is proving to be very popular with shooters keen on this exciting and sometimes challenging discipline.  Many top field shooters are attracted to sporting clays, due to the similarities between this event and wild game shooting.

The overall sash and AA grade was won by Adam Shale, dropping only 6 targets out of 100.  Adam is recognized as a top competitor in this event and consistently performs at a level that is only attainable by a few shooters.  Mark Reynolds shot almost as well taking 2nd in AA with a score of 90/100.  Junior shooter Rhys McGauran again demonstrated his skills with a shotgun, knocking out of the sky 83/100 targets and winning A grade.  Brodie Seccull claimed 2nd place on 80/100.  After a short shoot off to decide the winners in B grade, Darren Saunders took home the sash with 77/110, closely followed by hardworking club man, Stephen Tamme on 75/110.  Another nice result after a shoot off was achieved by C grader Clayton Easden 75/110, two targets ahead of Mark Large finishing on 73/110.  Graham Coyle won the best veteran trophy with a tally of 81/100.  Graham continues to put in an enormous amount of work as club curator and is part of the enthusiastic group of 5 stand volunteers, instrumental in setting up all the traps on a regular basis.

CORBETT  USES  SUB GAUGE  TO  EFFECT

Visiting shooter Mike Corbett used his sub gauge gun expertly to win overall and A grade at the March skeet shoot held at Wangaratta Clay Target Club on 27th March.  Mike delivered an unbeatable result of 99/100 under perfect conditions and was thrilled to take home the sash against some very strong competition.  Shepparton skeet shooter Peter Finn came 2nd place in this grade on 93/100.

David Jackel also put in a nice score of 98/100 winning AA grade, just ahead of Paul Johnston 97/100.   It was pleasing to see Warren Fish earn his 50 break badge with another excellent tally of 98/100 winning B grade and Benalla gent. Max Gribben taking 2nd with 92/100.  All rounder Trevor Bussell scored 89/100 in C grade and 5 stand sporting clay enthusiast Ian Auranaune placed 2nd on 83/100.

Another very satisfying day of skeet shooting here in the North East of Vic.  Consistent targets, friendly atmosphere and nice food all helped make for an unbeatable day of clay target shooting at our excellent facility here in Wangaratta.

BRIAN REID 100/100 WINS CUP.

The annual Bill Attwood – Kevin Law memorial skeet championship event was held on Sunday 28th February, with a good roll up of keen skeet shooters in attendance.  The Wangaratta Clay Target Club is pleased to hold this significant championship on an annual basis and is one of the clubs major skeet shoots for the year.  Bill Attwood, who has put an enormous amount of input into the skeet shooting scene for many decades, once again travelled up from his home in Melbourne to present the cup and trophies.  The late Kevin Law, also a top skeet shot, was heavily involved in administrative duties and always willing to help others was a good friend of Bill Attwood.

The day was fairly hot with a light breeze and some excellent scores were recorded in both events.  The club flew White Flyer targets and the traps performed well, which resulted in consistent  skeet targets presented to the competitors during the day.  Unfortunately, no juniors were in attendance this year.  Bill has put in many hours of  skills advice to junior shooters over the years and is famous for his generosity to this younger group of participants.

AA grade skeet champion Leigh Roberts won the Bill Attwood 50 tgt. championship this year, he shot 79/79 after a shoot off with Gil. Farish in 2nd place on 78/79.  Another nice score of 60/61 resulted in a win for A grader Mike Corbett using a 28 gauge gun, ahead of Peter Finn finishing on 48/50.  Rob Holloway had a good day taking home the sash in B grade 48/50 and local club secretary Angelo Grassi was happy to win 2nd with 65/68.  All rounder Trevor Bussell shot a tally of 45/50 winning C grade and John Baker shot 48/54 taking out 2nd place.

The next event was the 50 tgt. Kevin Law memorial skeet championship.  Club Vice President Brian Reid was successful winning overall and AA grade with a clean score of 50/50.  Gil Farish again won 2nd in this grade on 76/77.  Mike Corbett won his 2nd sash for the day in A grade, 49/50 placing club President Phil. Smith in 2nd place 48/50.  B grade winner Will Holloway tallied a result of 55/58, one target ahead of brother Rob Holloway in 2nd with 54/58.  The C grade trophy was taken home by John Baker 42/50 and Trevor Bussell won 2nd place.

The overall Attwood / Law High Gun cup was awarded to Brian Reid after shooting a clean 100/100.  Brian was pleased to have been congratulated by David Jackel, a past winner of this prestigious cup.  David was heard to ask for a loan of the excellent skeet training DVD that Reid uses, which may assist him also, in improving his already significant skills for next years event.

AA grader Phil. Grainger put in a terrific display of his excellent shooting skills at Wangaratta Clay Target Clubs February Championship events on Saturday 20th.  Phil. went home with an armful of trophies after winning both events and the overall high gun.  Scoring 149/150 in the 50 target point score and a clean 135/135 in the 50 target double barrel c/ship.  after a shoot off against AA grader John Wojcik 137/138.

Other results for the day in the points score were 2nd place in AA to John Wojcik 148/150, and the A grade sash was nicely won by Gordon Twamley 143/150 ahead of Greg Rowe 140/150.  Veteran shooter Jim Kelly took out 1st in B grade 154/165, placing Neville Bussell in 2nd on 151/165.  Junior up and coming top performer Jack Sandral achieved 132/150 winning C grade and lady shooter Jessica Goodall won 2nd place 125/150.

The 50 tgt. double barrel saw Euroa all rounder John King  remaining in control in A grade, with a perfect result of 52/52, one target ahead of John Vardanega 51/52.  Local shooter and club sponsor Tony Ruvolo – Winsec, performed well in B grade with a score of 48/50, leaving Graham Coyle, our hard working ground curator in 2nd place 50/53.  Michael Rowan took out C grade on 49/50 and Jack Sandral 44/50 in 2nd.

SECCULL SUCCEEDS AT WANGARATTA

A very warm and fine day greeted 30 shooters who visited the Wangaratta Clay Target Club on Sunday 14 February to take part in the monthly 5 stand, 100 target championship.

Several new members from the Field & Game Assocn. joined up on the day, all adding to a wider pool of shooters with different skill levels enjoying the top rate facilities here at the Wangaratta complex.

The traps all functioned well during the day and the targets were excellently set by a small group of local members, dedicated to the sporting clay discipline, early in the morning.  The club appreciates the efforts of their willing band of volunteers in all three disciplines whom do lots of behind the scenes work on a regular basis.  Without this group of  special people working harmoniously together, the club would not function.

An unbeatable tally of 92/100 resulted in A grade shooter Brodie Seccull, winning the overall title on the day.  Regular and super keen competitor Alex Mikolajewicz won 2nd in A grade on 86/100, another great score.  AA grader Brett Jory shot a superb result of 90/100 winning A, followed by Mark Reynolds on 85/100.  B grade was expertly won by Terry Pigram 84/100 and 2nd place to Ian Auranaune on 82/100.  Nice to see lady top shot Angela Kloppenborg put in a winning score of 80/100 giving her the C grade sash and 2nd place to Adrian Connell 71/100.

Wangaratta is now shooting 5 stand competitions the second Sunday of each month and holds practice sessions each Wednesday and Saturday’s – excepting the third Saturday of each month.
