Hams and Turkeys at Wangaratta

A warm and fine day prevailed at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club Xmas shoot on Saturday 20 December.  A nice crowd of 46 shooters came along to our popular club to enjoy a relaxed day of novelty events in a festive atmosphere.

The club opened all three layouts for shooters to try out and some good scores were achieved by some in a different discipline than they would normally participate in.  As usual, the hams and turkeys proved very popular again as trophies.  A relaxed BBQ was held at the end of the day giving all present a chance to have a chin wag and wish each other the best for the festive season.  Thanks to Gordon Twamley for providing two sides of lamb for the raffle.

The 25 T D/B results were:  AA, Rod. Wilson 25/25,  Jason Wilson 25/25.  A,  Stephen Murphy 25/25,  Christian McGauran 32/33.  B,  Ern Wemyss 25/25,  Neville Bussell 24/25.  C,  Brad Carey 22/25,  Rhys McGauran 26/30.

Sammon shows how it's done

Richard Sammon put in a first class performance at Wangaratta Clay Target Club last Skeet shoot for 2014 on Sunday 30 November.  Almost five squads of skeet shooters rolled up on the day for another top day of shooting at this very popular club.

Under hot, gusty and very humid conditions Sammon managed to win the overall champions sash dropping only two targets out of the 100 target event.  After shooting 48/50 in the first round, he went on to shoot 50 straight to claim the title.  Alan Kidd, another AA grader, won 2nd place on 94/100.  Mark Rosenboom from Griffith put in another great result of 94/100 to claim the A grade sash, just ahead of dedicated skeet enthusiast Dennis Savage 92/100.  B grade was nicely won by Peter Finn on 95/100 which left local member Brian Reid in 2nd place 93/100.  Finn was fairly selective when nominating on who his squad mates were, which obviously proved beneficial to his results.  Peter Roper from Mount Beauty won C grade with 90/100 ahead of Greg martin on 88/100.  Dennis Savage also won the veterans award on the day.

The clubs only shoot for December is our Xmas shoot which always proves popular due to the novelty events held and the relaxed and festive atmosphere on the day.

5 Stand November 2014

Jory in top form

Brett Jory still managed to win  the  Wangaratta Clay Target Club November Sporting Clays shoot after an early start at the grounds setting up the many traps in operation on the day.  Brett was ably assisted by Paul Reynolds, Reg. Carmody and Graham Coyle in the tricky task of creating a good mix of challenging and easier targets for shooters on the day.

Perfect weather conditions with little wind prevailed and all shooters enjoyed another excellent day of competitive target shooting at the first rate facilities provided by the club.  This is the final 5 Stand shoot for 2014, however another action packed program is scheduled for next year.

Jory finished the day with his usual high degree of accuracy on 88/100.  Mark Reynolds was four targets behind taking 2nd in AA grade.  Liam Whyte won the A grade sash on 81/100 with Christian McGauran following close behind on 78/100.  A score of 69/100 was required for David Whyte to take out B grade, only one target in front of Ed. Zawora in 2nd.  Junior shooter Ash Batey showed lots of skill and determination winning C grade 69/100 with lady competitor Margot Trellu from Mansfield taking out 2nd place on 57/100.

Local enthusiastic and skillful top shot Rhys McGauran won the Juniors award 66/100.

Another satisfying and enjoyable day for all shooters who attended.  It was great to see some new faces and lady shooters lining up to participate in one of the best and friendliest clay target clubs in the state.

Shale unbeatable at Wangaratta

Wangaratta Clay Target Club attracted 43 shooters to their 5 Stand championship on Sunday 12th October.   The attendance was ideal allowing for a top day of shooting and the event finishing at a reasonable time.

Brett Jory, Phil Andrews, Paul Reynolds, Daryl Hunt and other helpers all worked hard before the event in setting the many traps over two layouts catering for the different skill levels on the day.  This job is more difficult than it sounds, however the percentage scores at the end of the event matched up closely to the official grading rules as set out in the ACTA handbook which shows the settings were about right.

Top shot Adam Shale only dropped seven targets winning overall and AA grade on 93/100.  Marty Seymour was almost as skillful one target behind 92/100.  Liam Whyte put in a superb effort in A grade on 92/100, with Alan Perryman finishing 2nd after a shoot off with 89/109.  Jumior 5 Stand expert Rhys McGauran took out B with a score of 73/100 with Chris. Colvin  69/100 in 2nd .  Ash Batey took out C grade 71/108 with local all rounder Aaron Stamp winning 2nd with 70/109.

Gaye Shale who recently returned from the Commonwealth Games took out best lady shot on the day with 65/100.  Max Kavanagh won the veterans prize on 77/100 and the encouragement award, kindly donated by The Vine Hotel was given to Phil. Andrews for his help in setting the traps on a regular basis.

Savage & Jackel shoot off

A warm and windy day prevailed on Sunday 28 September at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club Skeet shoot.  The two events were generously sponsored by club treasurer Phillip Smith and his wife Norina.

Local skeet enthusiast David Jackel struggled a bit in the 75 target championship event missing some targets from stations that normally would not be a problem for him.  However, his score of 71/75 got him over the line winning the overall sash with Max Oakley three targets behind taking 2nd in AA grade.  Event sponsor for the day Phil. Smith, shot 69/75 targets with Shepparton shooter Peter Finn 68/75 deciding the A grade winners.  First in B grade was Ray Stamp 69/75, one target ahead of Brian Reid 68/75.  Reid had some early difficulty on station 2 but after a helpful hint from David Jackel soon regained momentum with this target.  Ray’s son, Aaron Stamp took out the sash in C grade 62/75 ahead of Reg. Carmody on 60/75.

The 25 target handicap was won by Dennis Savage 61/62 after a shoot off with David Jackel 60/61.  Both these competitors were in top form and only through Jackels lack of concentration did he miss his target.  It was nice to see lady skeet  shooter Alison Harwood take out 3rd place with an impressive tally of 63/65.

High gun winner over the two events was David Jackel 96/100,  Ladies trophy to Alison Harwood 88/100 and best Junior was Alex. Johnstone 66/100.

Jory drops 8 – wins overall

The Wangaratta Clay Target Club has been blessed with perfect weather for several of its most recent shoots and Sunday 14th September was no exception !  As a result, visibility was perfect throughout the day and the orange fluoro targets stood out nicely against the blue sky and green paddock background.

A reasonably good number of 5 standers attended to take part in what is now a well established event here in Wangaratta .   A nice mix of Field & Game and A.C.T.A members were evident on the day, which is great to see these two groups of members coming together to enjoy their chosen discipline.

Our club secretary Brett Jory shot splendidly all day, only dropping 8 of the more difficult targets out of a possible 100.  Brett, Phil. Andrews and others helped set up the traps positioning and angles early Sunday morning, which created a nice combination of straightforward and tricky targets presented during the event.  Peter Hall was only one target behind Brett on 91/100 finishing 2nd in AA grade.  A high score of 89/100 saw Alan Perryman win A grade,  two targets ahead of Shepparton gun & ammo dealer Bill Eagle 87/100.  Barry Ellis from Beechworth,  a very regular shooter here at Wangaratta, took out B grade 67/100 with Trevor Bussell on 60/100 in 2nd place.  C grader Steven LePoidevin shot 54/100 to win the meat tray and Ash. Batey finished on 51/100 in 2nd place.

Best veteran on the day was Brian Hoyland 73/100 and top junior was Rhys McGauran.

Top day for Skeet

The club conducted a 100 target skeet shoot  under ideal conditions on Sunday 31 August.  Both skeet grounds were set up early to suit the slight breeze on the day and as a result shooters enjoyed ideal targets throughout the championship event.

Amongst the local and visiting skeet shooters it was nice to see a good mix of veteran, lady and junior shooters line up for a great day of competition.  The clay target facility in Wangaratta is well regarded by shooters from across the country.   Recognized for our friendly and welcoming attitude, clear background and high standard of equipment used all makes the club a first rate sporting complex for our local community.

David Jackel won O/All & AA on 99/100.   David unfortunately dropped his 100th target after shooting consistently well during the event,  Gil. Farish from Benalla shot 96/100 with his 20 gauge U/O Miroku gun taking 2nd.  Regular visitor from Shepparton, Peter Finn took out A grade with a result of 93/100, one target ahead of Dennis Savage 92/100.  Peter’s son Colin had a good day shooting 96/100 winning B grade ahead of Royce Wojtowyez 90/100.  A score of 88/100 saw Peter Roper take out C in front of Reg. David Luelf took home another sash in A grade 69/70 with Phil. Woods in 2nd place on 46/47. Ern Wemyss won B grade with Fred Bienvenu in 2nd place. Shane has been involved in the sport for over 20 years and with his wife Leeona enthusiastically support their twins in their chosen sport. Hayley commenced shooting when she was 12 and earlier this month won 2nd place in the Single Barrel event at the Combined District Senior Schools shoot at Echuca. Her sister Emma also achieved great success at this large event by taking out 1st place with a result of 16/20.

Sammon Wins at Wangaratta

Foggy and cold conditions remained throughout the day at the July Skeet shoot at Wangaratta on Sunday 27 July.  Some new faces turned up for the two events held which put pressure on our best local members to compete with.

The first event of a 50 T C/Ship. was won by Benalla shooter and AA grader Gil. Farish on 60/62 after a shoot off with A grade competitor Doug McKenzie finishing on 59/62.  Richard Sammon took out 2nd place in AA with 56/59.  Peter Finn, a very keen Shepparton skeet shooter shot 45/50 winning 2nd place in A grade.  It was nice to see Alison Harwood win B grade 82/86 after a shoot off with local shooter Brad. Sparling on 81/86.  Alison enthusiastically follows the sport of skeet shooting and is a great and generous mentor to younger shooters taking on the sport.  C grader Rick Palmer shot 56/59 winning C grade ahead of junior top shot Corey Wilkinson 47/50.

The club then held a 25 pair Skeet doubles event which resulted in Richard Sammon winning overall and first in AA grade with the unbeatable score of 47/50.  David Jackel who was off form a little on the day took out 2nd place on 43/50.  Again, Doug McKenzie from Melbourne won A grade hitting 45/50, displaying great technique and controlled follow through on all targets.  Peter Finn again came in 2nd place behind Doug on 44/50.  Peter’s son Colin had a nice win in B grade shooting 46/50 ahead of Callum Palmer with another good result of 43/50.  In a reverse scenario of the first event, Corey Wilkinson won C grade 41/50 just ahead of Rick Palmer on 40/50.

The overall high gun winner over the two events was Richard Sammon 95/100 and best Junior shooter was Corey Wilkinson on 88/100.

Hunt consistent as usual

The Wangaratta Clay Target club conducted a Down The Line championship shoot on Saturday 19th July. Perfect weather conditions remained all day and some excellent scores were achieved as a result. Despite some broken targets being released on ground three, the day ran smoothly. After some repairs to the trap this week, all will be ready to once again present shooters with the excellent consistency of targets that the club is recognized for.

The 50 tgt. point score championship was won outright by local AA grade member Daryl Hunt 146/150, followed by Peter Cavedon on 141/150. Gordon Twamley, a very keen follower of the sport, shot a nice tally of 145/151 to win A grade, defeating Enio Cavedon on 142/50. B grade winner Neville Bussell put in a score of 134/150 in front of all rounder John Hutchison 128/150. Top lady shot Kath Wilkins won the sash in C grade on 126/150, with junior shooter Alex Wozniak in 2nd on 115/150.

The last event was a 25 pair Double Rise Championship, which really sorted out the field. Again Daryl Hunt was too hard to topple winning overall on 39/50, again in front of Peter Cavedon on 35/50. A grader Alan Cole shot a nice result of 37/50 ahead of Gordon Twamley 35/50, sorting out this grade. John Hutchison finished with 31/50 to win B grade and Jacqui Wemyss from Corowa placed 2nd on 27/50. Another keen lady shooter Jessica Goodall won C grade with 26/50 ahead of Alex Wozniak on 26/60.

The high gun trophies went to Overall Champ. Daryl Hunt 215/230, Veterans to Enio Cavedon 203/230, Juniors to Logan Wemyss 200/230 and ladies was taken out by Jacqui Wemyss 181/230.

Hall wins against Seymour

After a frosty morning, the sun came out with a perfectly blue sky making for ideal shooting conditions at Wangaratta on Sunday 13 July. After miserable weather prior to the day, everyone enjoyed the conditions for the 100 target 5 stand sporting clays competition set up over two grounds.

Using the recently repaired ’rabbit’ target machine added to the great variety of targets presented during the day. Sporting clay shooters love a challenge and the club feels confident that this was provided by Brett Jory and his band of willing helpers. By setting up the various traps to test the skill levels of both novice and experienced competitors alike all helped in making the championship a real success.

AA graders Peter Hall, Marty Seymour and A grade Nick Mazurek all shot excellent scores of 92/100 each. To make things a bit more challenging for these top guns, the club adjusted both the speed and direction of the traps for the shoot off. After the 25 target shot off Hall took the overall title with a tally of 21/25 defeating Seymour and Mazurek. Marty Seymour won 2nd place in AA and Nick Mazurek won the sash for A grade.

Junior all rounder Davey Jones also had a good day with a nice result of 82/100 taking 2nd in A grade. Paul Reynolds, a very keen Field & Game shooter won B grade 72/100 ahead of another top junior shooter Rhys McGauran on 62/100. C grade winner was John Hutchison 59/100 with Max Gribben from Benalla in 2nd place 56/100.

Jackel wins under difficult conditions

Sunday 29 June was an unfriendly weather day for clay target shooting at Wangaratta. Cold, overcast, breezy and sometimes wet weather made for uncomfortable conditions, however local skeet shooter David Jackel overcame all to win the championship event with the commendable tally of 105/109. David was very closely followed by visiting Griffith shooter and B grader Ray Hillam after a shoot off, with Ray tallying 104/109.

Mark McDonald from Murray River Gunsmithing performed consistently during the day with his Krieghoff gun taking out A grade with 94/100. Local enthusiast Phil Smith put in a nice performance taking 2nd place on 92/100. Lady shooter Trina Adams, a top simulated field shooter, won 2nd in B grade with a score of 92/100. Andrew Menegazzo shot a terrific score of 95/100 winning C grade, ahead of Aaron Stamp on 83/100 in 2nd.

Thanks go to the Griffith Clay Target Club for their generous donation of Yellow Tail wine to our local club, which was given out to the competitors at the conclusion of the days event.

Hadson takes out Continental at Wangaratta

Saturday 21 June saw wet conditions early on and then anovercast sky with occasional showers later in the day.  Less than ideal clay target shooting weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the nine squads of competitors from turning up to shoot at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club.

The days event totaling 110 targets ran smoothly and finished at a reasonable time.  Thanks go to the efficient office staff, shoot marshal and other club volunteers on the day.  This is one of the reasons that the club is considered as one of the best regional clubs to participate at.  The trophies of ammunition were appreciated by the winners, as this is something that any shooter can use at a later date.

The 10 tgt. points score eye opener was divided between seven shooters.  It was nice to see local shotgun enthusiast Fred Bienvenu shoot 30/30, as his form has been a little bit down of late.

The next event held was a 50 tgt. point score championship.  This was very ably won by Daryl Hunt with an almost perfect result of 149/150.  Daryl and his Blaser  gun have certainly performed well, winning many championship events over the last couple of years.  Junior shooter Andrew Evans took out 2nd in AA on 145/150.  David Luelf, visiting from Mansfield won A grade 157/165 after a short shoot off with Les Comensoli 156/165.  B grade competitor Steve Wozniak tallied 135/150 ahead of Sean Hourigan on 132/150 deciding 1st & 2nd in this grade.  John Hutchison won’t be in C grade a lot longer after shooting 144/150 to win ahead of Jo Ford 139/150.

The 50 tgt. Continental championships are always very popular with DTL shooters, the greater range of variation in target presentation makes this a challenging and enjoyable discipline.  A perfect result of 56/56 was achieved by B grader Jason Hadson, winning the overall – well done Jason, ahead of Sean Hourigan 46/50.  AA grader Peter Wilkins only dropped one target to win this grade on 55/56, very closely followed by David Bienvenu 54/55, both excellent scores.  As an aside,  I understand that David has been giving his brother Fred a few tips on the double rise discipline for future events.  Tina White dropped only two targets 48/50 winning her the A grade sash, with Chris Figgins on 48/51 taking 2nd place.  In a repeat of the points score event, John Hutchison again won C grade 48/50 and Jo Ford in 2nd with 47/50.

Overall high gun for the day was achieved by Daryl Hunt 228/230.  Best Junior was Andrew Evans 222/230 and Veteran high gun went to David Luelf 210/230.  Ladies high gun trophy was nicely won by Tina White 215/230.

Top shot Seymour wins overall

Perfect weather prevailed at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club on Sunday 8 June giving shooters optimum conditions to compete in the 5 Stand Sporting Clay Championship event. Again, the club provided a good mix of targets ranging from easier to difficult satisfying the shooters requirements at these events.

The Wangaratta club is very proud of its 5 Stand trap layout, spread out over two separate grounds. To have a sophisticated system like this in country Victoria speaks highly of the clubs committee and members. Countless hours have been contributed over many years by members in developing and maintaining this multi use facility, which is highly regarded by visiting competitors from around the country.

Sundays competition saw Marty Seymour win AA grade and overall with an excellent result of 87/100. Anyone who has competed in this discipline will know that shooting 87% of the targets is quite an achievement. Yarrawonga shooter Trevor Beach also had a good day and shot consistently to win 2nd place in this grade. Another top score of 84/100 was registered by A grader Mark Reynolds ahead of Christian McGauran taking 2nd with 79/100. Luke Keam won B grade with 65/100 only three targets ahead of junior Everton top shot Luke Bennett on 62/100. C grade was taken out by David Whyte 61/100 with 2nd place going to John Hutchison on 60/100.

Best Veteran on the day was Reg Carmody.

Top gun Jackel wines zone shoot

A superb autumn day attracted some top shots at the Wangaratta Clay Target Clubs VCTA North East Zone Skeet Championship on Sunday 27th April. The Wangaratta venue holds this significant event on an annual basis and always attracts the best shooters from our region. The days events combine both singles and doubles skeet championships which adds a different dimension to our normal skeet shoots held here on a regular basis.

The 50 target N.E Zone Singles Skeet event was nicely won by local talented AA grade skeet shooter David Jackel shooting 67/69. Gil Farish from Benalla using his 20 gauge gun shot 47/50 taking out 2nd in this grade. Trevor Jones performed extremely well in A grade with a result of 52/55 ahead of Shepparton shooter Colin Finn on 63/66. Mark Rosenboom visiting from Griffith had a nice win in B grade with 66/69 and Trevor Bussell shot 44/50 in 2nd place. After a shoot off between father and son Rick and Callum Palmer, Rick took out C grade with a tally of 55/58 ahead of Callum on 54/58.

The action really heated up for the 25 pair skeet doubles event, highlighting the skills of the top shooters on the day. Gil Farish dropped only two targets to win AA and overall with 52/54 followed closely by David Jackel on 51/54. Colin Finn shot another amazing doubles score of 52/54 to win A grade and Mark McDonald also put in a top effort of 50/54 taking out 2nd. Griffith visitor Mark Rosenboom won B grade again on 45/50 and local club shooter Bram Schmarling finished 2nd with 42/50. Again, Rick Palmer managed to outshoot his son Callum with a score of 47/50 by 5 targets.

The overall high gun winner for the day was David Jackel with a tally of 97/100.

Tasmanian junior wins championship

Perfect autumn weather provided ideal shooting conditions at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club for the Down The Line championship events held on Saturday 19th. Visitors from Tasmania, Beaufort and our local region thoroughly enjoyed the facilities and friendly environment that the Wangaratta club is well known for.

The program included a total of 110 targets, which kept the shooters on the day busy doing what they like best – busting clays! The club uses White Flyer targets thrown by Gemini traps, resulting in consistently presented targets that shooters appreciate.

The 10 target single barrel eye opener was shared by 5 shooters. The first championship event was a 50 target single barrel and was nicely taken out by A grader Darren Clark on 47/50. 2nd in A was Ian Towers with a tally of 48/52. Local shooter Bruce Henshall won AA with 46/50 just ahead of Grant Whiteley from Tasmania 45/50. Andrew Calandro won B grade shooting 44/50 with Roger Lyford taking 2nd place 43/50. Alex Wozniak returned a score of 38/50 winning C grade.

It was nice to see junior shooter Luke Whiteley from Tasmania win the 50 target double barrel event. Luke shot like a true champion winning A grade and overall with a perfect result of 79/79. Alan Ford dropped one target with a tally of 70/71 placing him 2nd in this grade. Laurie Fitzpatrick who kindly took on the job as shoot marshal for the day won AA on 78/79, ahead of John Wojcik 73/74 after a shoot off. One of our club sponsors, Tony Ruvolo had a good day over the traps winning B grade on 69/71. Junior top shot Callum Parker was placed 2nd with 68/71. Once again, Alex Wozniak took out C grade with 47/50.

The high gun awards went to Overall - Darren Clark 106/110, Junior - Callum Palmer 100/110 and Veteran – Max Gribben 103/110.

Hot & windy conditions no deterrent for Hall

Uncomfortably hot and gusty wind didn’t stop acclaimed 5 Stand Sporting Clays champion Peter Hall putting on a top display of marksmanship at Wangaratta on Sunday 9 February. Hall dropped only seven targets out of the 100 target event to claim overall champion on the day. A splendid performance under very difficult conditions that must rate as one of the best displays of shotgunning skills seen locally and probably anywhere else for this challenging discipline.

Peter’s son Robert was only two targets behind to win 2nd in AA grade with a score of 91/100. A tremendous result for both father and son and a result of many hours of practice honing their considerable skills and abilities with using a shotgun.

Visiting shooter Alan Perryman shot another good score of 82/100 winning A grade, one target ahead of Christian McGauran on 81/100. Veteran clay target enthusiast and regular local shooter Reg. Carmody easily took out B grade with 77/100 and Colin Repacholi won 2nd place on 68/100. C grade was won by Trevor Bussell with a result of 67/100, only one target in front of junior shooter Rhys McGauran at 66/100.

Best veteran for the day was Neil McIntosh shooting 69/100.
